Tips For Your Home:
- Install and use deadbolt locks in all doors.
- Secure sliding glass doors with locks AND a wooden dowel shoved into the track of the door.
- Trim back shrubs that hide doors and windows. Cut back limbs that could help a thief enter a second story window.
- Make sure all area's outside of the house are well lighted.
- Install a peephole or viewer in all entry doors so you can see who is outside without opening the door.
- DO NOT trust door chains. They can be easily broken.
- DO NOT open the door to someone you don't know. Insist that service personnel verify their identity before opening the door.
- Make sure that your home appears occupied when going out.
- Keep your garage door(s) closed and locked as well as interior garage doors.
- If you will be gone for several days arrange for your mail and newspaper to be stopped by phone. NEVER leave notes stating that you are out of town.
- Notify your local police department that you will be out of town so they can do extra patrols around your neighborhood.
Tips For Shopping And Protecting Your Vehicle:
- Park in well-lighted areas and lock your doors no matter how long you will be gone.
- Put valuables out of sight or in the trunk.
- Avoid parking garages if possible.
- Never leave windows or sun/moon roofs open.
- If your vehicle is equipped with an alarm set it every time you exit the vehicle.
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Always have your keys ready to unlock your vehicle, you don't want to pay attention to finding them and not watching the area around you.
- If you do not feel safe ask a security guard to walk you to your vehicle.
What Your Kids Need To Know:
- Never open the door to ANYONE when you are home alone.
- Keep all windows and doors locked at all times. And also keep curtains and shades closed.
- Never tell anyone who calls or knocks on the door that your parents are not home.
- If someone knocks on the door and refuses to leave or they try to force entry call 911 immediately.
